In these unprecedented times, our lives have changed almost in an instant. We all handle change differently; some of us will find it easy to keep our minds and bodies busy, others will not.
Our current ‘normal’ is one where we are no longer able to sit in a full office and laugh with our colleagues, visit our family for a Sunday roast or relax in a pub garden with friends in the sunshine. Instead some of us will lose a loved one, some of us will beat coronavirus and some will not.
When it is so difficult to find the positives in life we need to be kind to each other now more than ever whilst also focusing ourselves at the same time.
Our grandparents are now learning to face time, our children are painting the walls and many of us are now professional banana bread bakers!
We are in this together, and we will get through this. In the meantime, our friends at The Lucy Rayner Foundation have shared their 10 Top Tips in keeping our mental health well during these difficult times.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is a vital part of working on a construction site, quarry, or in a potentially hazardous area. Even though the cause of the issue and prevention, if necessary, takes priority, if there is even a slight risk of injury or damage to health on a site, workers must be informed about the importance of PPE and when to use it. It can be easy to slip into bad habits and forget about the importance of PPE signage. However, this post can be a great opportunity to refresh your health and safety and restart on the right foot. Particularly during the remaining cold winter months, it’s very important to provide as safe a working environment for employees as you can, meaning safety signage is essential.
Why Do We Need PPE Signage
PPE signage can be crucial to ensuring that workers are protected from
Falling objects,
Slips
and hazardous chemicals.
Signage can simply remind the necessary people to consider PPE if there is any risk to their health onsite. Not only can lack of protection equipment increase risk dramatically and potentially cause injury, but it can also create a lot of legal issues for the business owner/responsible person.
Examples Of PPE Signage
Below are some examples of Stocksigns’ wide range of PPE signage:
These are a great way to contain all of your PPE rules/instructions in one place. This makes it more convenient for site users and easier to enforce safety. Site Safety Boards can include warning, hazard, prohibition and PPE signs.
This can be a great reminder to both site users and the public of the legal ramifications of not using the correct PPE and taking the necessary steps to stay safe onsite.
Sometimes, conditions or lighting onsite can be poor, meaning you’ll need a sign with its own light source. Photoluminescent material will charge in ambient light, and glow whenever visibility is poor. This keeps the sign visible at all times to maximise safety.
These can help to stop anyone entering site who is not wearing the correct PPE. Additionally they can act as a reminder for site users to check their equipment
Stocksigns offer a wide range of PPE signs to help you protect yourself, and others onsite. You can check out the range here. If you’d prefer to have a browse of our products, you can view the shop here.
With new laws regarding fire safety in consultation this year, it’s very important now more than ever to ensure your safety signage is clear and consistent around your premises.
If you are in any way responsible for a business or commercial property, you must display the required signage to ensure employees and/or customers are safe and meet safety standards, as well as:
Carry out a fire risk assessment of the premises and review it regularly
Tell staff or their representatives about the risks you’ve identified
Put in place, and maintain, appropriate fire safety measures
Plan for an emergency
Provide staff information, fire safety instruction and training
One of the best ways to make sure that your signs are clear in all conditions, is to opt for photoluminescent. Photoluminescent signs will self-charge in ambient light, meaning that if there is a power failure or conditions mean visibility is poor, these signs will illuminate, creating a clear guide to the nearest exit in an emergency, as well as any extinguishers, alarms and more.
As well as clear and concise signage, ensuring that employees are aware of the correct procedures and locations of aid in the event of a fire is incredibly important. Fire notice boards and action notices can be a huge help with this, as well as fire assembly point indicators. These can all contribute to minimising panic during a fire and maintaining an organised and calm manor which is vital during an emergency.
To read a great article about the laws and legislations of fire safety signage and what each sign means, click here.
At Stocksigns, we can provide a comprehensive range of fire safety signs, notices and packs – and all can be printed on photoluminescent material. Check out our range here.
In 2018/19 there were 15,005 commercial fire incidents in England.
It is that time of year again when our team get a few days out the office to mingle with current and potential connections. Last week they attended the South East Construction Expo, and this week the team will be exhibiting at Kent Construction.
Unlike the vast majority of signage companies in the UK, here at Stocksigns we have always had a strong presence in exhibitions. Since the 1960’s we have exhibited and attended Construction, Facilities, Highways and Health & Safety exhibitions nationwide.
Overall the exhibition was a success! Many exhibitors there are already current customers of Stocksigns, so this provided an opportunity to have a personal catch-up; something that can often be difficult to arrange when everyone has blocked out diaries or are located far across the country to each other!
On the stand was Andy Norman, a Senior Account Manager and and Steve Wright our Business Development Manager. Josh Lyne was also on the stand who is new to the signage industry and is our Trainee Account Manager.
If you did not get a chance to meet the team at South East Construction, they are at the Kent Construction Expo on the 3rd October.
The Construction Industry has the most fatalities than any other industry in the UK (HSE.gov.uk)
The dangers of working in Construction should never be overlooked, and whether you are an apprentice or a site manager, it is the duty of everyone on site to keep everyone safe.
47% of deaths
in the Construction Industry
over the last five year period were due to falls from height
Stocksigns’ 5 Top Tips for a Safe Site
1. Every worker needs all the necessary training
This may seem obvious to most of us, but when the daily to-do list gets longer faster than things are getting ticked off, or projects on site are behind schedule it is easy to forget to pencil in some time for staff training.
Training should include; proper use of machinery and tools, scaffolding, working at height, health and safety and fire safety training.
2. Use signage to highlight every danger on site
We may be a bit biased here being a safety sign manufacturer, but signs are often overlooked and tend to be a last minute thought.
The Health and Safety Regulations 1996 state “that safety signs are provided (or
are in place) and maintained in circumstances where there is a significant risk to
health and safety”. However, signs are should only be used in conjunction with safety procedures and not be a substitute for one.
3. Clear communication is key
Whether this is communicating verbally, written or with signage, communication is key in every industry. All staff need to be kept in the loop with the daily goals and activities and also briefed on the potential dangers.
To help maintain the safety message throughout the day, a Site Safety Notice Board may be an ideal addition to your.
Do you need some help with your safety signs?
If you require a site survey or advice to decide which signs you need, and where to install them, our experienced team can help.
“Make sure that you always have the right tools for the job. It’s no use trying to eat a steak with a teaspoon and a straw.” – Anthony T Hincks
Using incorrect or damaged equipment dramatically increases the risk of injury, so although some financial investment is needed, it will get the job done on time, safely and to a high standard.
5. Ensure employees and visitors have all the correct PPE
As much as a PPE sign can remind everyone to wear the correct protective gear, some employees and visitors may need some help. Ensure that replacements for any worn or unfit PPE is easily accessible and provided.
Other than providing the PPE equipment and clothing, ensure all staff know which PPE is required for which job.
The Stocksigns team have been fundraising for various charities over the years. This has involved sleeping rough for the night for the YMCA, cycling to Lapland (not literally), the 3 Peaks Challenge, climbing Mount Toubkal, and this year the team have successfully hiked up and down the mountains of Dingle, Ireland.
The Dingle Dash Challenge, as we like to call it, took place on the 8th and 9th June 2019, which saw the team hike for 22 hours covering 46miles and reaching a total elevation of 9,000 ft. The team hiked and climbed their way through heavy downpour, sunburn inducing sunshine, downhill bogs and scrambled up and across rocky terrains, and successfully raised over £5,700 for RoSPA and St Catherine’s Hospice!
The team of 17 included 7 staff members from Stocksigns, 2 from Gatwick Airport, 2 from RoSPA, 3 from Messagemaker Displays and 1 from Service Plus. We also had Pete and Nigel as our support team from the Stocksigns and Messagemaker Displays team.
Day 1
Distance: 26.5 miles Elevation Gain: 6,107 ft Time: 12h 25m
Our 12.5 hours hike began at the Brandon View Point with an easy start along the road side with a few rainbows to admire. This was short lived with heavy downpour and rocky terrains soon to follow.
The climb up Mount Brandon was in the clouds with some steep boulders to climb, and slim un-even paths to follow. The team made it to the summit, exhausted and wet but with a great sense of achievement. The journey down was cold and wet for a few hours until they emerged from the low clouds into beautiful sunshine and a rewarding view over Feohanagh before the 10 mile hike and to the finish line.
Day 2
Distance: 20 miles Elevation Gain: 2,977 ft Time: 9h
The distance for Day 2 may have been shorter, but the team had started the day trying to lessen the pain in their feet and legs. After a few stretches the team began their hike to Eagle Mountain. Walking through Dunquin up and down steep hills, we had a highly varied weather again with periods of downpour and sunshine (80% of us are sun-burnt!)
The team made it to the top of Eagle Mountain with fantastic views all around them. After a quick break to re-fuel the team set off down the other side, with their knees crunching all the way down!
The fantastic views most certainly helped the team ignore all their aches and pains, but the challenge proved more difficult that our previous 3 peaks challenge!
The hot sunshine, downpour, slippery bogs, boulders and rock climbing put the team through their paces, challenging their physical and mental strength, but they never stopped smiling! At every peak the team proudly flew their banner with all our sponsors and our chosen charities.
A big thank you to our sponsors

Our team at Stocksigns love two things; fundraising for great causes and a challenge, so this year we will be taking on the Dingle Dash!
Last year, we conquered Mount Toubkal, where the treacherous snowy mountain had some of us shaking in our boots, we’ve slept rough to fundraise for YMCA. This year we’re off to Ireland, to tackle a couple of mountains along with some rain.
On the 8th of June 2019, a team of 15 men and women from Stocksigns, Gatwick Airport and RoSPA, will be hiking across Dingle for 2 days to fundraise for RoSPA (Royal society for the Prevention of Accidents) and St Catherine’s Hospice.
” St Catherine’s Hospice was established in 1983 and we are experts in end of life care. We’re the leading provider of hospice care in Sussex and East Surrey, helping around 2,100 terminally ill people, their family members, friends, and carers each year.
We’re a local charity with a big ambition: to help everyone face death informed, supported and pain free. Providing expert hospice care, we’re there for people in West Sussex and East Surrey when life comes full circle.
We also pioneer standards in end of life care through collaboration, research and training, reaching even more people facing death and bereavement.
We provide completely tailored care. It could be a bath, a favourite meal, or helping someone manage their pain. For us, hospice care is whatever our patients and those closest to them need it to be.
We also give emotional, spiritual and welfare support to anyone affected by death and bereavement.
Our care is only possible thanks to the generosity of our local community who donate to and volunteer with us. Each year around £7.5 million is donated by our supporters and more than 1,000 people volunteer to help give our tailored care when people need us most.
Community support means we’re there when life comes full circle. “
Our Vision: Life, free from serious accidental injury. Our Mission: Exchanging life-enhancing skills and knowledge to reduce serious accidental injuries.
Following a public meeting in Caxton Hall in 1916 it was decided to elect a London “Safety First” Council to tackle the “alarming increase in traffic accidents, and the direct connection therewith of the restricted street lighting which had been necessitated by the War conditions”.
So began the organisation which was to become the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
RoSPA offers a wealth of advice, information and resources in all areas of accident prevention: on the road, at work, at leisure, in the home and in schools and colleges. RoSPA is a registered charity and have been at the heart of accident prevention in the UK and around the world for 100 years.

Just a month ago Stocksigns announced their Silver Constructionline membership. Now we are very pleased to announce…
The membership is “an increase level of scrutiny and assurance”, which has been achieved through numerous validations assessments for our environmental management, quality management, equal opportunities, modern slavery act adherence, anti-bribery and corruption policies.
This accreditation will open many doors for Stocksigns, offering validated proof of our high level of Health and Safety in our both our installations, survey and in our day to day running of the business.
Stocksigns is dedicated to providing the highest quality product and service to every customer, for every project.
Wintery conditions increase the risk of slips and falls outdoors, leading to potentially serious and life-changing injuries. On a national scale, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) report that 31% of all non-fatal injuries are caused as a result of slips, trips or falls on the same floor level.
To combat these statistics, Stocksigns has a wide range of outdoor construction safety signage in preparation for the weather taking a turn for the worst. Those who oversee the control of any outdoor site, especially construction sites, must work together to manage the potential risks and eliminate these risks, allowing people to move safely around the site.
The main causes for slips and trips on these sites include uneven surfaces, obstacles, trailing leads and cables, wet or slippery surfaces and unexpected changes in the flooring level. Implementing the appropriate signage in locations where risks are high is a crucial safety tool to save injuries and even lives.
Traditional signage can sometimes be taken for granted, but the are legal requirements by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) which requires employers to protect against these hazards in the workplace.
Stocksigns essential hazard signs help alert and warn of potential dangers in and around a site. Hazard signs cover three main areas; Danger, Warning and Caution dependent on the severity of the threat. Made available in aluminium and rigid plastic, the Stocksigns Group range of construction safety signage are fully compliant with ISO 7010. The signage specialists are committee members of the Heath and Safety Sign Association, as well as being an active supporter and partner of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
It’s crucial for both employers and employees to be made aware of the risks when working in treacherous conditions outdoors. We have a duty as signage professionals to guide individuals in making the correct choices when implementing signage around a site, maximising the levels of safety and reducing the potential risks to themselves and others around them.
If all graffiti could be as artistic as Banksy, people might not have such a problem with it. Unfortunately, a lot of graffiti is rude, unsettling or just unsightly and it is something that should be abolished. Graffiti can ruin the family friendly feel of villages or the feeling of safety in cities and is associated with crime and bad behaviour.
The cost of vandalism…
Beyond this, vandalism can destroy personal, company and local government property. Even if the attacked item is not destroyed, it nonetheless is very inconvenient and costly to remove. Network Rail spends approximately £5million per year cleaning up graffiti, while the London Underground spends close to a staggering £10million per year, proving that vandalism is a huge problem. Markings that obscure the purpose of the sign can be dangerous so it is essential that the messages of road signs or warnings are clear to the public.
At the Stocksigns Group we aim to reduce the inconvenience and cost associated with graffiti by offering signage that is graffiti and permanent marker resistant. These qualities are particularly useful as removing graffiti rapidly has been shown to help reduce the likelihood of re-offending, as vandals thrive off the chance to showcase their work.
How can graffiti resistant products help…
Although no sign can claim to be completely damage proof, we offer a wide range of graffiti resistant products. One of these products is Vitreous Enamel, a product that has been present for over 100 years and is renowned as one of the most hard-wearing, vandal resistant signage options.
The process of creating a Vitreous Enamel sign involves the fusion of an image onto glass coated steel in a furnace at temperatures up to 800oC, creating a sign with a lifespan of over 40 years. The finished sign has a high quality, vibrant, lustrous finish with fire retardant and fade resistant qualities, making them a popular choice for places where signs need to be long lasting in harsh environments.
Stocksigns can also supply a range of durable signs which provide many of the benefits of Vitreous Enamel. With vibrant colours, hard-wearing coatings and various metal options, they are robust and convenient vandal resistant signage and will last for over 10 years.
Extend the life of your signs…
Keen to offer products that are suitable for all applications, Stocksigns can also apply a protective overlay film (POF) on the majority of standard signs to extend the lifespan by up to 3 years. These are commonly used on construction sites and around local communities as the POF creates a surface which can be easily cleaned to rid graffiti with the use of specialist graffiti remover or just a simple microfiber cloth and water or acetone.
Managing Director of the Stocksigns Group, Danny Adamson said, “Vandalism always poses problems in society, so we aim to maintain and discourage damage to signage with our range of vandal resistant solutions, suitable for all levels of requirements. Recovering signs from incidences of graffiti creates a much longer lifespan making them more cost efficient. Speed of removal also decreases time spent cleaning and restoring signage, diverting staff resources and money back to areas that require them.”
This has been a fabulous week for everyone at The Stocksigns Group. On Tuesday 20th June, our Managing Director, Danny Adamson, attended the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Gala Award Dinner to present a cheque for over £10,000, as part of our fundraising efforts for the charities Brighter Beginnings Campaign.
As the official signage partner of RoSPA, Stocksigns have been supporting the charity for almost a decade and since the beginning of the year, we have been fundraising for the Mount Toubkal Trek which took place in May. The trip saw an intrepid team of 12 climb to the summit of North Africa’s highest mountain. What, from the warmth of a Surrey office, seemed a daunting prospect really was a test of both endurance and physical strength with the team tackling freezing temperatures and sheer drops on their route to the top.
We were thrilled with the support we received from so many of our suppliers, family and friends, all of whom contributed so generously.
The fundraising efforts of David Cload, Projects and Survey Manager, who arranged and led the trip were also recognised when he received the prestigious RoSPA Guardian Angel Award at the dinner hosted as part of this year’s Safety and Health Expo 2018.
Our loyal customers also contributed to this fantastic total, which included donations made as part of our New Year sales promotion.
On behalf of all the team at Stocksigns, we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in helping reach such a fantastic amount for a worthy cause.

The Merstham Mix, a new ‘not for profit’ café based in the Merstham Community Hub, has been given a fresh look due to signage donated by local sign company, Stocksigns Ltd.
The café, located on Portland Road, opened its doors late last year with the aim of bringing the local community together, while providing healthy and affordable meals, using ingredients donated from local supermarkets and food producers.
Stocksigns Project Manager David Cload explains how they came to be involved. “When Stocksigns were contacted and asked to support the project, we were more than happy to help. It’s a very worthwhile scheme and as a local business we are pleased to be able to support such initiatives. Not only that, but the café has now become a lunchtime favourite of the Stocksigns staff!”
The company provided an array of branded internal signs, window stickers and displays in the vibrant café colours.
“We would like to thank Stocksigns for all their help” said Anna Rooke, Volunteer Manager at the café. “The signs look great and have really helped to put our café on the map”
The Merstham Mix is open at selected times, Monday – Saturday.

No Smoking Day is full of help and advice for those who want to quit smoking, and a prompt for others to consider it. With 79,000 deaths recorded in 2015 as a result of smoking, it’s no secret how damaging smoking is to a person’s health.
To help lower the number of smokers in England, a smoking ban was implemented in 2007 for all enclosed public spaces and vehicles. Today, many establishments are taking a step further and are opting for completely smoke-free premises to create cleaner outdoor environments and help people quit smoking.
Signs play a key role in communicating the smoking policies of your premises, and informing where it is against the law to smoke. The Smoke-free (Signs) Regulations 2012 requires that ‘at least one legible no-smoking sign must displayed in smoke-free premises’.
To help you keep in line with regulations, Stocksigns have a comprehensive range of no-smoking signs, including wall mounted, hanging and floor signs.
From the 12th – 16th March, all No Smoking signs bought online are discounted by 20%! View the full range here.
For help on how to quit smoking, please visit the NHS Smokefree site.

This Friday we start our epic Three Peaks Challenge! This involves climbing the 3 highest peaks in the UK in 24 hours. We are raising money for our partner agency RoSPA’s (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Brighter Beginnings campaign. This was launched as part of their centenary celebration after discovering that a third of parents felt they didn’t have enough information to protect their children . The appeal has already seen the launch of:
A Parent Hub – with helpful information to keep children safe
A freephone helpline – providing 24 hour support on the phone and over email
As accidents continue to be the biggest killer of children and young people under 19 the work the carry out is invaluable.
The challenge begins in Scotland on Friday 23rd with our ascent up Ben Nevis at 4pm. The peak is the highest in the UK at 4, 411.18ft! We then descend at pace before cramming back into our mini bus and head south to England.
Next up is Scafell Pike, we start our ascent in darkness at the cringingly early time of 2.30am on Saturday! This mountain is the smallest but is the most technical in parts which will test our head torch navigation skills to the max! We then descend and make our way to Wales.
Finishing up with our 3rd and final Mountain, Snowdon, we aim to have completed the descent by 3pm no doubt exhausted!
Our Managing Director Danny Adamson, a solid member of our training walks, said “The team has worked incredibly hard and they have been dedicated to the training. Conquering this technical and enduring challenge is equal parts exciting and daunting, however we are confident we can complete this in the narrow time frame of 24 hours.
“We would love to thank everyone for the support they have shown so far, and our incredible sponsors including Famous Publicity, Centaur Roofing, Windmill Tapes, Metamark and NEPlastics.”
Stocksigns Group Managing Director Danny Adamson said, “We are putting ourselves through this mighty challenge to help parents give little ones the best possible start at life. Health and safety is at the heart of what we do and being able to support RoSPA in keeping children safe is a cause we are proud to support.
At Stocksigns safety is something we feel passionate about and we would love for you to join us in supporting our cause to help parents give their children the best start at life. Health and safety is at the centre of all we do so we are proud to be able to support and fundraise for such a worthy cause.
